Overview

Anterior segment trauma refers to injuries affecting the front part of the eye, encompassing structures such as the iris, cornea and lens. These types of injuries may occur from chemical burns, penetrative trauma and blunt force injury, to name a few.

Possible Causes of Anterior Segment Trauma

• Blunt force trauma may be due to sports injuries, and penetrative trauma occurs when something sharp like a shard of glass, piece of metal or wood penetrates the front of the eye.
• Chemical injuries from contact with household cleaning products, hazardous industrial substances, or oil splashes may occur.
• Foreign bodies, such as metal shavings, glass fragments, or splinters, may accidentally penetrate the front of the eye.
