Dr Anele Yako is a fellowship-trained Vitreoretinal Surgeon Ophthalmologist who practises in Umhlanga, Durban, South Africa. He is a humble, friendly, dynamic, and motivated Retinal Specialist Ophthalmologist who is precise, analytic and diligently astute consistently with the care of his ophthalmic patients and provides an exceptional ophthalmic experience for his patients. He is masterful in his craft and performs his work with particular diligence and finesse.
Dr Anele Yako is from Mthatha, a small town in the rural part of the Eastern Cape. He completed his schooling in Mthatha and obtained his undergraduate degree (MBChB) from Walter Sisulu University (formerly University of Transkei) in Mthatha in 2009. He completed his medical internship training at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital in 2011, after which he completed his community service period at Grey Provincial Hospital in King William's Town, after which he returned to KZN and worked in the Accident and Emergency Department of Port Shepstone Regional Hospital and later as a Medical Officer in the department of Ophthalmology at Madadeni Hospital in Newcastle KZN. He pursued postgraduate ophthalmology studies at the University of the Free State in conjunction with the Universitas Academic Hospital/ National Hospital in Bloemfontein in 2015. He attained the Fellowship in the College of Ophthalmology (FC Ophth) of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa in 2018, followed by the Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology (MMed Ophth) degree in 2019 under the auspices of the University of the Free State. He underwent further sub-speciality training in the field of Vitreo-Retinal Surgery in the form of a one-year Surgical Retina Fellowship training program in 2023, under the auspices of the prestigious Groote Schuur Hospital and University of Cape Town, where he gained ample expert skills and knowledge to make him the proficient retinal specialist he is in his practice of ophthalmology. Obtaining the Surgical Retina Fellowship in Cape Town makes him the first South African of colour to attain this prestigious qualification
Retinal surgery and retinal work is not only a job for him, it's his passion. As the saying goes, "If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life." Dr Anele Yako regularly attends national and international conferences, congresses, workshops, lectures, and webinars on the subject of retina and intraocular advances, in order to keep up to date and informed on the latest in the field of Retina and/or Ophthalmology.
Within the field of Retina, his fields of interest include diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, myopic traction maculopathy, surgical macular diseases, ocular trauma, intraocular inflammation and cataracts, surgical aphakic interventions and anterior segment reconstruction, age-related macular degeneration, including sub-retinal injections therapy. He regularly participates in outreach programs to raise awareness of eye and retinal diseases and regularly attends and gives talks that are related to retinal and/or eye diseases. He is happily married with two children, from whom he draws his inspiration to excel in all that he does in the care of his patients. He is an avid sports car and supercar enthusiast, as well as a nature lover.
