Overview
Cataract surgery is a highly effective and widely performed procedure. It is a common outpatient process that removes the hazy, obscured lens and replaces it with a new intraocular lens. Most patients can expect to return home on the day of the procedure. Cataract surgery is primarily done to resolve cataracts, which result in blurry vision, increased glare, and difficulty seeing.
What to Anticipate Before Cataract Surgery
Usually, your ophthalmologist conducts a preoperative assessment beforehand, which includes an ultrasound to evaluate the shape and size of your eye. This ultrasound is a crucial step, as it helps determine the most suitable type of intraocular lens for your eye. The intraocular lens, an integral part of the procedure, is placed to ensure your vision improves because light is adequately directed onto the back of the eye. There’s no regular maintenance of the lens, and you may not even be aware it is there in time.
Various intraocular lenses are available, and you, along with Dr. Yako's guidance, will have the opportunity to choose the most appropriate one for your needs. Your active participation in this decision-making process is important, as it ensures that the selected lens aligns with your lifestyle.
What to Expect with Cataract Surgery
Your ophthalmologist uses dilating drops to widen the eyes. During cataract surgery, Dr Yako carefully removes the hazy, damaged lens and replaces it with a clear intraocular lens, which was meticulously selected for you.
There are a variety of ways to remove the obscured lens through the use of an ultrasound probe via the process of phacoemulsification, where the damaged lens is broken into tiny fragments for easier removal or extracapsular cataract extraction, whereby an incision is made to remove the lens in a single piece. The synthetic lens then fits into the space of the lens capsule. The procedure is personalized to your unique needs and conditions, ensuring the best possible outcome.
