Endophthalmitis Surgery

Overview

Endophthalmitis surgery, such as a vitrectomy, is performed for various eye conditions. A vitrectomy involves the surgical resection of the vitreous fluid, a clear gel-like substance in the eye, and the removal of infectious material. Importantly, depending on the unique case, it also plays a key role in preparing the eye for the introduction of antifungals or antibiotics, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of vision restoration.

Surgical Approaches for Endophthalmitis

Vitrectomy

A vitrectomy is a procedure performed to restore optimal vision due to damage from endophthalmitis when other forms of treatment have been ineffective. The vitreous humor, a clear fluid which becomes infected, is removed to treat the infection and enable the successful delivery of medication.

Vitreous Tap and Medication Administration via Injection

In less severe cases of endophthalmitis, a different approach is taken. Surgeons remove a portion of the vitreous fluid strictly for analytical purposes to examine the sample in detail. This vitreous tap is followed by the injection of medications into the eye, a method that has proven effective in these minor cases.

Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV)

Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a surgical approach employed to treat endophthalmitis, an eye infection. It is a specialised technique that removes the vitreous fluid and residual debris. PPV is often performed in conjunction with intravitreal antibiotic injections to permanently resolve such a serious infection.

Limbal Vitrectomy

A limbal vitrectomy is a specific type of vitrectomy done to resolve endophthalmitis. The surgery is done through a limbal incision, a tiny incision made at the corner of the cornea. Endophthalmitis is a serious, eye-threatening eye condition which results in inflammation of the inside of the eye due to infection. This highly effective technique involves the resection of infectious matter, including inflammatory debris. The use of antibiotics, a crucial part of the treatment, may also be injected into the eye to resolve the infection.
