Lens Replacement Surgery

Overview

Lens replacement surgery (refractive lens exchange) is a safe and effective surgical procedure that involves replacing the natural eye lens with an artificially designed intraocular lens (IOL) to treat refractive errors (astigmatism, farsightedness, or nearsightedness) and reduce the patient’s reliance on spectacles and contact lenses.

Reasons for Lens Replacement Surgery

  • To treat refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
  • Eliminate the patient’s reliance on prescriptive eyewear. The intraocular lens, a translucent, artificial lens, is designed to improve vision.
  • During cataract surgery, the hazy, obscured natural eye lens is removed and substituted with a clear intraocular lens, promising a significant improvement in eyesight.

Procedure

With only a small incision made, the lens replacement procedure is minimally invasive, ensuring a much shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery time, and minimal risk of postoperative complications. Typically performed as an outpatient procedure, you can expect to return home on the day of the surgery. The tiny incision is designed to heal independently without the need for stitches. The natural eye lens is usually removed through the phacoemulsification process. Phacoemulsification is the breakdown of eye lenses using a laser or ultrasound. The powerful soundwaves produced by the ultrasound help liquefy these fragments, and a specialized vacuum system is used to suction the broken pieces. After the removal of the eye lens, an open space remains for the intraocular implant. Through a tiny incision, the intraocular implant is carefully placed where it takes the place of the natural eye lens, ensuring a seamless, uncomplicated recovery process.
